Jeff has worked in professional architecture and urban design for over 30 years. Alongside his practice, he has cultivated drawing and painting from life, inspired by the world around us—particularly the urban environment. He often paints public spaces and street scenes—the places that, together with surrounding buildings, shape the fabric of our cities. His work seeks to capture these active environments through shifting light
and the movement of people, expressed in both drawings and vibrant paintings. In architecture, this focus is known as placemaking; in illustration, it aligns with
urban sketching.

John Hancock
Website: johnahancock.com
Long before he studied art in college and grad school, John began his love of “urban sketching” when he regularly drew among the brownstone buildings of downtown Wichita (KS). Later, as an art and design professor, and now as an independent artist, John continued his practice of sketching in widely varied locations. For the past 10+ years, he has regularly taught sketching, sketching the city, sketching with inks, and watercolor sketching to adults in both workshop and small class formats locally and regionally. John also helps organize and administer the Charlottesville Urban Sketchers group. He regularly attends other chapters’ sketch meet-ups and workshops to see how they organize and how fellow instructors teach their workshops. He attended the Chicago International Symposium in 2017, the Buenos Aires International Symposium in 2024, the Ohio Regional USk Summit (Columbus) in 2024, and the Carolina Sketch Crawl in 2025.
John has been fortunate to get opportunities to teach workshops for USk chapters in San Francisco, Chicago, DC, Richmond, Cincinnati, and Fredericksburg (VA). He taught “Sketching with Soluble & Permanent Inks” (Chicago Seminar, 2019), “The Positive Power of Negative Space” (Chicago Seminar, 2023), “Sketching on Toned Paper with Inks & Watercolor” (Chicago Seminar, 2025), and “Sketching with Soluble & Permanent Inks” (Ohio Regional Summit in Cincinnati, 2025).
